We will continue to build upon a culture where students, parents, and staff feel welcome and are willing to share their questions and concerns. During current times, we are especially focused on keeping our students and staff safe by following outlined district and campus COVID safety precautions. We must come together to support our students and provide them every opportunity to be successful.Īlong with the focus on meeting standard, it is our vision to ensure our students receive these exemplary learning opportunities in a safe, nurturing environment. This will require strong parent, teacher, and school involvement. These practices will be supplemented by targeted small group instruction in reading and math, tutorials, and various formative and summative evaluations to ensure we are making progress. These endeavors will be accomplished by ensuring our students come to school daily and understand content objectives, master content performance tasks, and meet success criteria. We are committed to providing instructional resources and practices that accommodate the varied learning needs of our students. ![]() We will ensure every student receives effective instruction and intervention tailored to meet their specific needs. This challenge will require us to trust the processes needed to ensure academic performance. At Parkdale, it will be our goal to improve academic performance for all students and ensure student growth. Our focus is to build upon the foundations of Panther PRIDE during the 2020-2021 school year to ensure our campus meets standard. In my short-time, I have been privy to the foundations of Panther PRIDE and how it will assist us in making student excellence a standard at Parkdale. The partnerships we develop together will be vital to the success of our students at Parkdale. Waco ISD officials say the district is making effort for its staff to be reflective of the diversity of the community.It is an honor and privilege to have been selected to serve the community of Parkdale Elementary. Data shows that 60.95% are Hispanic/Latino, 27.84% are Black/African American, 8.54% are White, and 2.67% are other. "This community, you see a lot of Hispanic leaders, and we've all had a different journey and ultimately, we're here to inspire students and make a way for them," said Ortiz.Īs of the 2020-2021 school year, there are 14,567 students within the district. This year the tamale contest was a drive-thru setting. That respect allows Crestview to host cultural events like its annual tamale contest for families to show of their cooking, and for others to experience a bite of Hispanic culture. We show respect to our families, and families show respect to us," she explained. "And that's what we want students to know, we see you and we accept you and you're a part of our school family," she said.Ĭraytor, also a first-generation college graduate with Mexican heritage, has instilled a culture of belonging in order to be inclusive for students and their families. "I think it helps that our students see an individual that looks like them, that speaks like them and shares those same experiences," said Ortiz.ĭown the road at Crestview Elementary, Principal Samantha Craytor is celebrating her diverse student body. She is now showing young children that anyone can be a leader and encouraging other people of diverse backgrounds to apply to work in schools. Thirteen years ago, Ortiz started as a teacher at Waco ISD and has worked her way to the role of principal. "My mom really instilled in us you've got to go to school if you want something to change in your life, and that's through education," said Ortiz. She says it taught her lessons you can't learn in a book. Growing up with a single mother, she helped her family in the fields. Ortiz is a first generation college graduate and came from a family of migrant workers. "I've been successful in education because I can relate to our students," she said. Within the walls of Parkdale Elementary, you'll find principal Lena Ortiz.
